Frequently Asked Questions
  • Exclusive/Captive Agent. This is an agent who works for just one insurance company and only sells policies for that particular carrier. Captives cannot make recommendations outside their company, which isn’t always the best solution for the client.
  • Independent Broker. Whereas, these particular agents would for several different companies and offer multiple policies from several companies to help customers compare different plans, rates and policies. Independents can make recommendations based on what’s best for you, not the insurance companies.

IMO = Independent Marketing Organization. Usually referred to as an IMO when it’s on the life side.

FMO = Field Marketing Organization. Usually referred to as an FMO when it’s on the health side.

You shouldn’t be giving up anything if you go with an IMO/FMO. Usually the IMO/FMO not only can get you a better contract (level of commission) as opposed to going directly with the company, but also the IMO/FMO can provide better support for you and your agency.
